Johnson crossed the overtime line with the lead prior to another wreck that forced a caution. Because Johnson had already cleared the OT mark, the caution flag signaled the race’s end....

The NASCAR Cup Series rolled into Sin City for the South Point 400 on Sunday. And like anything that goes on at the Strip, the race was filled with highlights and lowlights. Come the end of the day, it was Joey Logano who proved the fastest. The driver of the No. 22 Team Penske car staged a late comeback to shock Ross Chastain and seal a spot in the Championship 4....

But the man with the hot hand right now is Chase Elliott. Currently in fourth place in the playoff standings, three points above the cutoff, Elliott has two wins in his last three races and three total on the season. Elliott finished ninth at Martinsville in March and has three top 12s in his last four races at the short track. But Busch loves this unique course and has taken home victories in two of his last five trips there while finishing in the top 5 each of the last six times....

That will be the sentiment after yet another strong showing by Martin Truex Jr. in New Hampshire. After winning the first two stages of Sunday’s Ambetter 301, Truex faltered in the third stage, which allowed Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell and Chase Elliott to battle it out for the win. Bell ultimately won the race — his first win of 2022 — with a dominant final 20 laps and left Truex with more heartbreak....

The just-completed Challenger Round was kind of easy to figure out, but now things get a little more spiced up, especially with the major wild card of Talladega looming as the third and deciding race of who moves on to the next round. Anything and everything is possible on the 2.66-mile monstrous Superspeedway, and the Chase drivers who don’t have wins will all be candidates to win, as well as at least 28 other drivers that will have a better chance to win than they do on any other track....

National Amelia Earhart Day occurs annually on July 24 and on Wednesday, Earheart would have been 122 years old. A woman who broke flying records, she’s celebrated for both her contributions to the advancement of women and aviation. Born in Atchison, Kansas, in 1897, she saw her first plane at a state fair when she was 10 years old, according to the official website. However, the young girl reportedly wasn’t impressed with the plane and it wasn’t until she saw a stunt-flying exhibition that her interest in aviation was piqued....

The independent government agency, which is tasked with documenting and preserving records relevant to American history had set up an exhibit commemorating the 100th-year anniversary of 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which stated: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” As The Washington Post reported, part of the exhibit included a large photograph that linked the woman’s suffrage movement of the early 20th century to more recent protests....

Concerns about a possible inside attack among defense officials have prompted the FBI to screen tens of thousands of National Guard troops sent to Washington D.C. to help secure Biden’s inauguration, according to the Associated Press. “We’re continually going through the process, and taking second, third looks at every one of the individuals assigned to this operation,” McCarthy told the outlet on Sunday. The official noted that the vetting has not yet produced evidence of such threats, and leaders have also not seen any other evidence to suggest problems from within their ranks....

Roughly 45,000 National Guard members have been involved in coronavirus mitigation efforts since the beginning of the pandemic, having been activated in every state. National Guard units were also called out during times of civil unrest as protests began in the U.S. after the death of George Floyd. “Thankfully, civil disturbance operations seem to be receding,” Lengyel said during a webinar hosted by the Brookings Institute. “But COVID-19 appears to be, maybe even on the rise, in some cases, and there’s no sign of operational tempo reduction in our future....
