The incident took place in the parking lot of Mambo’s Cafe, a Cuban restaurant at the intersection of Western Avenue and Victory Boulevard in Glendale, California, on October 17.
The boy and his mother had been visiting the boy’s father at the restaurant, where he works, according to NBC 12.
The Glendale Police Department said the mother and boy had been waiting in the parking lot when the child got out of the vehicle by himself. As the boy stood in the parking lot, a vehicle approached him with a man and a woman inside.
The man driving the vehicle was completely naked and tried to get the boy’s attention by waving at him, police said. When the boy’s mother spotted what was happening, she yelled at the man and woman in the car, who then drove off.
“They rolled their car right next to mine, and cornered in and tried to call him to their car,” the mother told CBS Los Angeles.
The boy’s father, identified only as Gary, had been in the restaurant at the time of the incident, but by the time he came out, the car was gone.
He told CBS Los Angeles that his son “started crying” right away. “They had intentions in their head, and I’m just really glad that they didn’t follow through,” he said.
He urged the man in the car to come forward, adding: “You never approach anybody like that, especially if a child is by himself, especially being naked.”
Glendale Police Department released dashboard camera footage from the mother’s vehicle in a bid to identify the man and woman in the car.
The clip shows the naked man beckoning the boy towards him with a wave, while the female passenger in the car doesn’t appear to react. The mother is heard frantically calling to her son.
The vehicle was described as a 1999-2006 gray or silver BMW X5. The vehicle’s license plate may contain the letters LMN or LNM, police said.
The male suspect was described as aged in his 40s or 50s with white or graying hair. The woman was described as aged between 45 to 50 with dark shoulder length hair.
