William Byron proved that Saturday. The Hendrick Motorsports driver posted a blazing qualifying lap to put himself in prime position to seal his spot in the final round of the postseason.

He wasn’t the only one gunning for it. Playoff drivers made up each of the top three positions in Saturday’s qualifying, spotlighting the importance of this week’s race at Miami-Homestead Speedway.

Joey Logano overcame a suboptimal start last week at Las Vegas to win and give himself a chance at a second Cup Series championship trophy. The racing has tended to be unpredictable during these playoffs. But a solid showing in qualifying still goes a long way in helping drivers’ causes.

Who won the pole for the NASCAR race at Homestead?

William Byron nabbed the pole for Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 400, posting a 166.389 mph in qualifying to secure his first pole of the 2022 season.

Byron enters Sunday’s race just six points off the cut line. He’ll be hoping for a far better showing than the one he put up the last time he earned a pole — Byron finished 33rd after winning the pole at the Brickyard last year.

Byron will lead the field to start Sunday’s race. He’ll be joined on the front row by fellow playoff driver Christopher Bell, who will be searching for a much better result than the DNF he suffered at Las Vegas last week.
