Joey Logano enters the 2019 season as the man to beat after winning his first Cup Series championship in 2018.

Jimmie Johnson, under a new paint scheme and sponsorship, will look to become the first eight-time Cup champion in NASCAR history following the worst season of his career. Gone is familiar face Kasey Kahne, who retired amid health issues in 2018, but you’ll be seeing more of Dale Earnhardt Jr. as a commentator and studio analyst under NBC Sports’ revamped NASCAR America programming (as well as driving in at least one Xfinity race).

There’s also a dramatic rule change for NASCAR’s 71st season in the escalation of what used to be minor wrist slaps for inspection violations. Rather than merely being docked points in the standings for failing post-race inspections, teams and drivers will face automatic race disqualification along with the loss of points, trophies and prize money. The race runner-up would be declared the new winner should a driver fail an inspection.

Following the debut of a new playoff format in 2018, the Cup champion will again be determined by a 16-driver, 10-race playoff that consists of four cut-down rounds, with each round narrowing the championship-eligible drivers by four.
