The young Wildcats, the co-favorites with Maryland at 7-to-1 prior to the start of the season, have looked inexperienced and a bit lost in some contests. John Calipari’s squad is 9-1 straight up with its only defeat coming on the road at UCLA (87-77), a game in which the Bruins (100-to-1 in the futures market) controlled throughout. Kentucky is playing well below Vegas’ expectations, going 3-7 against the spread. Their futures price remains short, though, as the top-recruiting team is expected to improve with extra seasoning.
The reigning champs, the Blue Devils, moved from the SuperBook’s sixth favorites prior to the start of the year at 12-to-1 to their current number. Duke’s only blemish is a 74-63 defeat to Kentucky in the Champions Classic in Chicago. Otherwise, coach Mike Krzyzewski’s squad has chalked up victories against a handful of solid programs: 100-to-1 VCU (79-71), 80-to-1 Georgetown (86-84) and 50-to-1 Indiana (94-74). Sophomore guard Grayson Allen is blossoming into one of the best players in the nation, averaging 21.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Duke is a 29-point favorite over Georgia Southern on Tuesday night.
Like Duke, Kansas’ odds shortened a bit from 10-to-1 in the preseason to 8-to-1. The Jayhawks also have just one loss on the year, a 79-73 defeat to the top-rated Michigan State Spartans.
Tom Izzo’s group, led by early favorite for Player of the Year Denzel Valentine (18.6 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 7.2 APG), has moved from 20-to-1 to 10-to-1 to win it all, tied for fourth favorite with North Carolina. Virginia, Maryland, Villanova and Purdue round out the top offerings at odds of 12-to-1 odds.
Here are the updated futures prices offered at the Westgate. Preseason odds are noted in parentheses if changed:
