The Cornhuskers have renamed one of its 85 athletic scholarships to the Sam Foltz Memorial Scholarship, which will be presented to a player who “embodied Foltz’ traits of leadership, excellence in the community and in the classroom.”

The player who earned the scholarship this year will be recognized before the Cornhuskers’ home opener against Fresno State on Sept. 3
In addition, the Hero Leadership Award has been transformed in to the Sam Foltz 27 Hero Leadership Award, which will recognize 27 student-athletes who “exhibit strong leadership qualities, commitment to service and ability to encourage/empower peers.”

Foltz will also be remembered by all teammates on the field this season when they sport SF27 decals on their helmets.
Foltz was killed in a single-vehicle car accident in Michigan. He was 22.
