Arkansas State: Blake Anderson
Where he’s been: Anderson spent the previous two seasons as offensive coordinator at North Carolina. He was at Southern Miss as offensive coordinator prior to UNC, working for current Tar Heels coach Larry Fedora, who brought Anderson to Chapel Hill with him. This is Anderson’s first job as head coach.
Army: Jeff Monken
Where he’s been: Monken was head coach at Georgia Southern for four seasons before taking the Army job. He took the Eagles to the FCS playoffs in 2010-12. Before taking over at Georgia Southern, Monken coached running backs for current Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech, Navy and Georgia Southern. This is his second head coaching job.
Boise State: Bryan Harsin
Where he’s been: Harsin spent a season as head coach at Arkansas State, where the Red Wolves went 7-5, before returning to his alma mater. Harsin spent two seasons as co-offensive coordinator at Texas before going to Arkansas State, but Boise State is where his heart is. He was a backup QB there from 1995-99 and an assistant coach there from 2001 through 2010.
Bowling Green: Dino Babers
Where he’s been: Babers is well-traveled. In his first job as head coach, he led Eastern Illinois to a 19-7 record and a pair of FCS playoff appearances in 2012 and 2013. He has been an assistant at Baylor, UCLA, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M, Arizona, San Diego State, Purdue, Northern Arizona, UNLV, Eastern Illinois as well as a GA at Arizona State and Hawaii — where he played defensive back and running back.
Connecticut: Bob Diaco
Where he’s been: This is Diaco’s first job as head coach. He comes to UConn after being defensive coordinator at Notre Dame the past four seasons. Prior to his stint with the Irish, he was an assistant at Cincinnati, Virginia, Central Michigan, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan, among others. He played linebacker at Iowa.
FAU: Charlie Partridge
Where he’s been: This will be Partridge’s first head coaching position. He was assistant head coach/defensive line coach last season at Arkansas. Previously, he spent five seasons at Wisconsin as an assistant with other stops at Pittsburgh and Eastern Illinois, and was a graduate assistant at Drake and Iowa State — he went to school at both places.
Eastern Michigan: Chris Creighton
Where he’s been: He’s been successful everywhere he’s been. Before arriving at Eastern Michigan, Creighton was 42-22 in six seasons as head coach at Drake; 63-15 in seven seasons at Division III Wabash with three playoff appearances; and 32-9 at NAIA Ottawa (Kan) with two playoff appearances.
Louisville: Bobby Petrino
Where he’s been: This is his second stop at Louisville, where he coached from 2003 to 2006 and was 41-9, including a 12-1 mark in 2006 that ended with a win in the Orange Bowl. He was 34-17 in four seasons at Arkansas before being fired. He took 2012 off and after being hired by Western Kentucky and going 8-4, Louisville decided to give him another go at it. Petrino’s resume also includes an ugly 3-10 tenure with the Atlanta Falcons (he left after Game 13 to take the Arkansas job), as well as offensive coordinator stops at Auburn, Jacksonville Jaguars, Utah State, Nevada and Idaho.
Massachusetts: Mark Whipple
Where he’s been: This is Whipple’s second stint at UMass, where he was 49-26 from 1998-2003, including winning the I-AA national championship in 1998. He was also head coach at Brown (1994-97) and Division II New Haven (1988-93). He most recently was QB coach with the Cleveland Browns in 2011-12 and has previous NFL stops with the Steelers and Eagles. He also was offensive coordinator with the Miami Hurricanes for two seasons.
Miami (Ohio): Chuck Martin
Where he’s been: He spent the past four seasons at Notre Dame as offensive coordinator (2012-13) and QB coach. He left his mark at Division II Grand Valley State, where he was 74-7 from 2004-09 and won back-to-back national titles in 2005-06 (going 28-0 in the process).
Penn State: James Franklin
Where he’s been: Franklin has made a quick ascent up the coaching ladder. After spending time as an assistant at James Madison, Washington State, Idaho State, Maryland and with the Green Bay Packers, he spent time as offensive coordinator at Kansas State and Maryland before getting his first head coaching opportunity. He led Vanderbilt to unprecedented success in three seasons — the school’s first back-to-back-to-back bowl appearances — before taking over in Happy Valley.
Texas: Charlie Strong
Where he’s been: A successful defensive coordinator at Florida and South Carolina with stops at Notre Dame, Ole Miss and Southern Illinois, Strong finally got his chance at Louisville. The Cardinals were 37-15 in four seasons, including an 11-2 record in 2012 that included a win against Florida in the Sugar Bowl. Louisville finished 12-1 last season before the Longhorns lured him.
USC: Steve Sarkisian
Where he’s been: Sarkisian made two stops at USC — coaching QBs from 2001-03 and as offensive coordinator from 2007-08 — before taking his first head coaching job at Washington in 2009. He led the Huskies to a 34-29 record and four consecutive bowl appearances.
UAB: Bill Clark
Where he’s been: Clark had a dominating run at Prattville High School in Alabama as head coach from 1999 to 2007. He won two Class 6A state titles and had the Lions ranked nationally. He left Prattville to be defensive coordinator at South Alabama for five seasons before taking over as head coach at Jacksonville State as head coach last season. The Gamecocks went 11-4 and last on the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs.
Washington: Chris Petersen
Where he’s been: Petersen became synonymous with Boise State. He was offensive coordinator there from 2001-05 and head coach from 2006 through last season. The Broncos were 92-12 under Petersen, winning at least 10 games every season except 2013 when Boise State was 8-4. His tenure included five bowl wins, including two Fiesta Bowl victories.
Wake Forest: Dave Clawson
Where he’s been: This is Clawson’s fourth stop as a head coach. He has previous stops at Bowling Green (2009-13) that included three bowl appearances, Richmond (2004-07) and Fordham (1999-03) that began with an 0-11 season and ended with 10-3 and 9-3 seasons.
Western Kentucky: Jeff Brohm
Where he’s been: Brohm was offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky last season. He’s been the OC or QB coach at UAB, Illinois, FAU and Louisville as well. He threw for more than 5,000 yards at Louisville and spent parts of seven seasons in the NFL. This is his first head coaching job.
Wyoming: Craig Bohl
Where he’s been: It was a matter of time before Bohl decided to leave for a bigger opportunity. He was 104-32 at Division II North Dakota State from 2003 through this season. He won the past three Division II national titles, going 43-2 in the process with wins over FBS teams Kansas State, Colorado State and Minnesota. He’s also made stops as an assistant at Nebraska (where he played defensive back), Duke, Rice, Wisconsin and Tulsa.
