Republicans David Richter and Kate Gibbs are both running for New Jersey’s third congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Richter’s 47-second ad alleges Gibbs has had multiple arrests and labels her “an embarrassment” to the community as footage from Jersey Shore are displayed.

The ad begins with soft music over a serene beach and community setting before stating: “Kate Gibbs? She’s more that Jersey Shore.” The ad’s music then changes up to a techno beat and footage from the MTV hit show is played.

“Gibbs parties hard and she’s got the criminal record to prove it. Arrested multiple times. Public drinking. Caught with drugs. Even convicted of theft. Banned from Kohl’s for life. Sued nine times for not paying her bills. Jersey Shore was an embarrassment to our community. In Congress, Kate Gibbs would be, too.”

As Gibbs’ past is narrated in the ad, clips of former Jersey Shore cast member Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi are highlighted, with the reality star seen getting arrested, and falling over.

The ad concludes: “The better choice? David Richter. Conservative businessman. Husband, and father of four daughters. Pro-Trump. He’ll defeat Andy Kim and make us proud in Congress.

Politico reporter Alex Isenstadt referenced the ad in a tweet Friday:

“Kate thought the ad was trashy, condescending, and desperate, a perfect microcosm of Richter’s losing, carpetbagging campaign,” Gibbs’ general consultant, Chris Russell, told Newsweek Saturday. “There is a reason why David Richter isn’t receiving any Republican support in the district. Nasty and arrogant is a bad combination. That’s why the Burlington County Republican Committee unanimously supported Kate, why the Ocean County Republican Screening Committee endorsed her, and why New Jersey’s two Republican National Committee members put out a statement today condemning the ad.”

When asked if there would be a response to the ad, Russell said: “It doesn’t merit a response. Kate has owned up to making some dumb mistakes when she was in college. People understand that. What they don’t understand is how Richter claims to be a successful businessman, despite the fact that he was run out of his own company for poor performance and that his company was sued by the SEC for fraud, misconduct and materially false and misleading financial statements. But what can you expect from someone who bragged about going into business with Joe Biden’s corrupt brother?”

Newsweek reached out to Richter for a request to comment.

According to public records obtained by the Asbury Park Press in a February 14 article, “at the age of 20, Gibbs was charged with shoplifting after police said she stole various articles of clothing valued at about $80 from a Kohl’s department store in Cherry Hill.” The theft resulted in a lifetime ban from Kohl’s for Gibbs.

At age 22, Gibbs was charged with possession of marijuana, but those charges were eventually dismissed. At 28, she was charged with possession of alcohol at the beach in Sea Bright, for which she paid a $283 fine, according to the APP.

The article also stated that between the years 2006 and 2008, Gibbs was sued nine times by her landlord for “failure to pay rent on an apartment she shared with a friend. On three occasions, Gibbs entered into a default judgment with her landlord for unpaid rent and was notified of the risk of eviction for nonpayment.” Gibbs eventually paid the owed rent.

Gibbs, who had previously served on the Burlington County Board of Freeholders, explained in the APP article: “As a young woman, I made some poor choices, trusted the wrong people, experimented with pot, and did some immature things. It’s embarrassing and I’m not proud of it, but I won’t run from it either. I own this. The mistakes I made then, helped me become who I am today: An independent, responsible, successful young woman who is running for Congress because we need more real, genuine people representing us in Washington.”

Speaking about the incidents involving Gibbs, Ocean County Republican Party Chairman Frank B. Holman III said that while he was not happy, he felt Gibbs shouldn’t be barred from public service.

Democratic Congressman Andy Kim currently holds the seat that Richter and Gibbs are vying for.
