On February 2, New Mexico State Police Officer Mario Herrera responded to an emergency call over his dispatch radio. Dashcam footage released by the New Mexico State Police department shows the officer speeding down the road in order to help.
The incident involved an 11-month-old baby choking just outside of Esponala, New Mexico.
“The terrified parents rush the lifeless infant to the hospital,” a caption on the footage reads.
Officer Herrera tracked down the parents in their vehicle and urged them to pull over by the side of the road.
The parents are seen frantically exiting their car, with the father of the 11-month-old holding the boy in his arms.
In the video, Officer Herrera arrives and takes the baby to perform life-saving aid. After clearing the baby Elikai’s airways, the infant begins to breathe normally again and can be seen clinging to the officer.
“The relieved parents thank Officer Herrera as paramedics arrive,” the caption reads as an ambulance also pulls over by the side of the road.
“The quick actions of officer Herrera saved baby Elikai’s life. Thank you Officer Herrera for your commitment to keeping the citizens of New Mexico safe,” the department said.
The force also showed photos of the officer alongside Elikai and his grateful parents in the footage.
“Office Herrera was able to save baby Elikai and leave this story with a happy ending,” New Mexico State Police added on Facebook. “Great job Officer Herrera.”
In May 2018, a Florida police force released dramatic dashcam footage showing one of their deputies helping to save the life of a 3-month-old baby.
Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy Jeremie Nix was on his way home from finishing a shift when he was flagged down by a driver in Ocala.
The woman can be seen getting out of the car while holding her unresponsive baby and urging the officer to help. Nix performs some life-saving measures on the baby before deciding to take him to the hospital himself.
“I’m not waiting on medics. I’m half a mile from ORMC, I’m heading to the emergency room with the baby,” Nix tells a dispatcher on his radio.
“Doctors said that because of K9 Deputy Nix’s actions, baby Kingston is alive today,” Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “We are tremendously proud of Deputy Nix and we can already see that he and baby Kingston will have a deep connection that will last a lifetime.”
