No team has won the division in consecutive seasons since the Philadelphia Eagles won it four times in a row between 2001 and 2004 and the Dallas Cowboys are doing their best to ensure they don’t buck the trend.

After jumping off to a 3-0 start, the Cowboys lost three straight games to let the Eagles back into the running. Dallas trashed Philadelphia in Week 7, but has lost four of its next six games and extended its losing streak to three games with a 31-24 loss in Chicago on Thursday Night Football.

Two separate three-game losing runs would normally extinguish playoff hopes in most divisions, but the NFC East is not most divisions and the Cowboys remain in pole-position for a playoff spot despite a 6-7 record.

That is almost exclusively down to the fact the Eagles, who take on the New York Giants on Monday Night Football, have outdone Dallas in the ineptitude stakes and are mired in a three-game losing rut themselves.

Philadelphia was 5-4 going into its Week 10 bye, but has lost each of the three games it has played since. Disappointing as they were, back-to-back home losses against the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks were not entirely unpredictable as the Eagles have looked short of attacking weapons through the season.

Sunday’s defeat in Miami, however, was nothing short of calamitous as it came after a team that had won just twice up until then and after Philadelphia blew a double-digit lead.

Thanks to Dallas’ stutters, however, not all hope is lost for the Eagles. According to FiveThirtyEight’s statistical projections, Philadelphia has a 41 percent chance of winning the division to Dallas’ 59 percent.

The winner of Super Bowl LII can erase the tiebreaker with the Cowboys when they host them in Week 16 and have the easiest remaining schedule in the NFL.

The Eagles’ final four games are all against divisional opponents, none of which has a record above .500.

Following the game against the 2-10 Giants on Monday night, Philadelphia faces the 3-9 Washington Redskins on the road, hosts the 6-7 Cowboys and then plays the Giants in New Jersey in Week 17.

Philadelphia remains in control of its destiny and coach Doug Pederson suggested he was excited to see how his team will step up against the Giants on Monday night.

“This will be great for our leadership right now, where we are,” he said in his press conference, as per the Eagles’ official website.

“We’re not throwing in the towel. We’ve got a lot of football left. We’ve got a great opportunity. There’s still a chance for us. We control our own destiny.”

If Eagles fans are disappointed with the way the season has panned out so far, the same applies to their Giants counterparts.

The G-Men are 2-10 after losing their last eight games in a row and are on track for their consecutive double-digit losing season for the first time since the three-year period between 1978-1980.

Two seasons into his Giants tenure, Pat Shurmur’s days in New Jersey appear numbered.

Shurmur replaced Ben McAdoo, who was fired after less than two seasons with a combined 13-15 record—which included a 2-10 record in his second year.

Shurmur, however, is 7-21 since taking charge of the franchise.

The Giants are expected to turn to veteran quarterback Eli Manning on Monday night, who could make his first start since the Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills after rookie signal caller Daniel Jones suffered a high ankle sprain.
