The victory was Iowa State’s first over a No. 1 team since beating a previously undefeated Kansas team in 1957.

Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield scored a game-high 27 points and Isaiah Cousins had 26, but freshman forward Dante Buford (14) was the only other Sooner to score more than five points.

The Cyclones (14-4, 3-3 Big 12) played the Sooners tough in an 87-83 loss in at Oklahoma on Jan. 2.

The Sooners (15-2, 4-2 Big 12) were ranked No. 1 for the first time since 1990, but it probably won’t last long. OU was unanimously chosen as the country’s top-ranked team in the new AP poll, marking the first time since the 1993-94 season that the poll has had five different No. 1 teams — Oklahoma, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina and Michigan State — before the end of January. Now there will likely be a sixth.

Iowa State held a 41-35 halftime lead on Monday and built a 10-point lead early in the second half. Oklahoma cut the lead to 60-59 with 8:58 remaining, but the Cyclones scored the next seven points.

The Sooners then went on an 11-1 run to take a 70-68 lead on a Hield 3-pointer with 3:09 remaining. Iowa State answered with a layup by Jameel McKay and a Monte Morris trey to retake the lead. Cousins tied the game at 75-75 on one of his four 3-pointers, but after a Morris jumper, Iowa State was able to salt the game away from the free-throw line.
