Last week, as she and husband Guy Ritchie welcomed a motherless 13-month-old, David Banda, into their London home, the British tabs blasted the pair, and human-rights activists in the child’s native Malawi claimed they’d skirted local laws. In Malawi–where Madonna has pledged $3 million in aid–a judge postponed a hearing. The baby’s father, an impoverished onion farmer, told reporters he wanted to better his son’s future, while Madonna insisted she’d followed the rules. The adoption could become final in 18 months.
