In awarding the “Ellie” to NEWSWEEK, the judges said that “through its coverage of September 11 and the weeks that followed, NEWSWEEK demonstrated that the weekly news magazine is not only a vital form, but something of a miracle. The magazine offered instant perspective on incomprehensible horror; it broke news, reliably, amid a frenzy of misinformation; and it captured both the tragedy and the renewal of hope, in words and glorious photographs. This was the year in which weeklies had the opportunity to rise to greatness-and NEWSWEEK truly did.”
In accepting the award, Editor Mark Whitaker credited the magazine’s entire staff. “At NEWSWEEK, all we really set out to do on that awful morning of September 11th was to do the very best journalism we could do and the very best magazine-making we could do on a weekly deadline on just the biggest and most emotional story that any of us had ever covered,” Whitaker said.
