The NCI says it’s too soon to suggest that people stop using mouthwash. Warner-Lambert insists the product is safe, but isn’t taking chances. A low-alcohol version of Listerine is being shipped to the United Kingdom and will probably be sold in the United States soon. Marketing experts say other “light” mouthwashes-and a proliferation of low-alcohol labels-are certain to join the milder Listerine on store shelves. Says marketing guru Philip Lempert: “Putting a low-alcohol label on a mouthwash will be as good as putting oat bran on cereal boxes.”
