Another reason Logano has his best shot to win is that the elite Martinsville driver pool has shrunk by a third with Jeff Gordon retiring, which leaves only eight-time winner Jimmie Johnson and five-time winner Denny Hamlin as his main competition....

The intermediate track sets up an interesting race as three of the top four drivers in the playoff standings in Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick all have wins on 1.5-mile tracks this season and Busch and Harvick finished 1-2 in Texas in April. The main thing it did was finally rectify a move that had many shaking their heads 11 years ago when NASCAR and International Speedway Corp. moved the Labor Day weekend race from Darlington to California at the expense of a race date at Rockingham, N.C. The move was a change from tradition as Darlington had hosted its annual Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend since 1950. William Byron, Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson all earned spots in the night race in Charlotte, where they will start 16th, 17th and 18th, respectively, and it all came with a bunch of drama.
