During a news conference Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio said his office has been working with the City Council to discuss options for closing streets to vehicle traffic, widening sidewalks and adding bike lanes throughout the city. De Blasio said the project will begin in May, with at least 40 miles of streets affected at first. The project may expand to a total of 100 miles of closed streets and widened sidewalks for the duration of the statewide stay-at-home order, which Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday he was planning to extend in some areas past May 15....

Over the weekend, the number of patients who were hospitalized in the state after contracting the virus was below 10,000 for the first time since March 29. As of Sunday, 9,647 patients were hospitalized, Cuomo said. Hospitalizations throughout the state have been steadily declining since the New York Department of Health recorded its highest number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients on April 12, at which time 18,825 people who tested positive were receiving care in hospitals....

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the new record on Friday, saying that 21,027 new infections have been reported—as concerns about the increased transmissibility of the Omicron variant grow across the country and around the world. “The winter surge in COVID-19 cases is a reminder that the pandemic is not over yet and we must take extra care to keep ourselves and each other safe,” Hochul said Friday. “The vaccine is still our best weapon to defeat the virus and ensure we are safe from serious illness....
