On September 10, the Home Reef underwater volcano in Tonga began rumbling to life. The seamount began discolored the surrounding water as it gushed lava, spewing steam and ash, Nasa’s Earth Observatory said in a blog post. Hours after the eruption began, a new volcanic island emerged from the water. Tonga Geological Services has observed the activity surrounding the new island. On September 14, the island stretched to 1 acre and 33 feet above sea level....

Researchers say the simple lightweight device is not too expensive, easy to maintain, comfortable, and easy to use. It will particularly help kids who are too young to use or whose bodies are unsuited to existing prosthetic hands which use a harness and cable. The short video appears to show the Moskva missile cruiser, Russia’s flagship of its Black Sea Fleet, shrouded by a plume of black smoke. Ukraine claims it struck the Soviet-era vessel with a pair of missiles. Moscow has maintained that the cruiser was damaged after a fire on board caused ammunition to detonate. Kevin J. Lipsitz entered the guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Kiyo A. Matsumoto on Thursday, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Lipsitz allegedly gave customers false assurances about quick delivery times on medical equipment that he sold at markups as high as 500 percent, while providing fake tracking numbers and shipping confirmations on items that were not fulfilled in time. In addition to decades behind bars, if convicted, Lipsitz could also be ordered to pay a fine of up to $250,000 and restitution to victims....

Amanda Malpas, 34, is charged with chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death after she was arrested by the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday. Malpas is said to be a regular drug user, and continued to take heroin and methamphetamine despite being pregnant. The sheriff’s department said she injected herself with heroin to help with the pain of childbirth on March 5. “She admitted that when she felt the labor pains and felt the child breaching, she did self-administer a large dose of heroin,” said Sgt....
